A familiar is an option for delivering touch spells at range if you have one. It cannot be used to deliver touch spells. It is in no way an extension of the caster. Often players try to give the impression that it can perform tasks without being seen or making noise.

The DM should remember that Mage Hand is entirely visible. This means that while Mage Hand can be used to steal for the Arcane Trickster, it cannot be used in this manner by any wizard just because they can cast the spell. It is the same spell, but the wizard never gets the proficiency to use Mage Hand in this way. The interesting thing is that the Arcane Trickster can use the spell to perform intricate tasks such as picking locks and pockets (sleight of hand). Mage Hand is an interesting spell because of the ability for any mage as well as the Arcane Trickster Rogue to utilize it. There are also specific movement allowances provided as well. The description clearly identifies the abilities of the hand and what actions it can take. The rules for the Mage Hand are clear in the description of how the spell functions and the representation of the spell in-game. The hand can’t attack, activate magic items, or carry more than 10 pounds.

You can move the hand up to 30 feet each time you use it. You can use the hand to manipulate an object, open an unlocked door or container, stow or retrieve an item from an open container, or pour the contents out of a vial. You can use your action to control the hand. The hand vanishes if it is ever more than 30 feet away from you or if you cast this spell again. The hand lasts for the duration or until you dismiss it as an action. A spectral, floating hand appears at a point you choose within range.
